Is it okay to take a multivitamin as a source of vitamin B12 while breastfeeding?
No, it’s definitely not enough! You will need to continue to supplement your vitamin B12 with a B12-only supplement. You can take DHA in a multivitamin if it’s easier, but remember, it’s not a replacement for your normal vitamin B12 supplement which you should continue to take.

Do I need to take any special supplements?
200 mg of DHA a day (an omega-3 fatty acid of which plant-based sources include algae DHA) should also be taken for as long as you are exclusively breastfeeding, regardless of your diet. If your doctor detects a deficiency, they may also prescribe a vitamin D supplement.

Do I need to take any blood tests if I follow a plant-based diet while breastfeeding?
As long as your vitamin B12 levels were good during pregnancy, you made sure you took your vitamin B12 supplement regularly and are still taking it now, you don't need to do blood tests to check your levels. If not, aim to do the tests as soon as possible to check whether your baby needs a vitamin B12 supplement before weaning, or higher doses of vitamin B12 in the early stages if weaning has already started. If you’ve got any concerns, just ask our nutritionists for advice on the chat!
